By accommodating the Hunnewells with creative solutions to their design requests, Evolo Home Center made their Smithfield residence as unique as the area in which it is located.
Susan and Greg Hunnewell wanted to build a home on land they had purchased in central Maine. While searching for just the right residential contractor, the Hunnewells spent nearly a year interviewing candidates across Maine before choosing Evolo Home Center, of Newport.
“Nobody was as helpful as Kate and John at Evolo,” said Susan. “One of our friends used to do stick-built homes and he had some questions for us about modulars, but [in the end], he was comfortable and we thought ‘If he is, we are.’”
The Hunnewells traveled to Canada where Evolo’s modular homes are constructed, and inspected the level of quality. Susan said that time-wise, they did not want to spend years waiting for a stick-built home, and once they saw the high level of craftsmanship that went into the modular homes Evolo sells, she and Greg made the decision.
“Kate and John are so knowledgeable in what they do. And they were right up front with us – very open, honest and responsive,” she said. “Our home is exactly what we wanted.”
Although the Hunnewells chose a ranch home, Evolo was able to raise the ceilings to nine feet and make other changes. The floor plan is open, and Susan loves the pocket door Kate added, which she can use to close off the contents of their mudroom.
“No one who comes over can tell this is a modular because Kate changed things so beautifully,” she said.
Kate also altered the design of one of the bedrooms and turned it into a sewing room. The door, which contains about nine panes of glass, was placed at angle, and large side-by-side windows were included in the room to maximize natural light. A closet was built-in to store fabric and tools, and the floor is oak, so pins and needles will not be lost.
Another unique detail Susan enjoys is the way the kitchen cabinets were finished. She said Kate helped her choose a two-toned look, with stained wood and black. Many visitors have commented how much this changes the look of the room.
Throughout the entire process, Susan said Evolo put a full effort into making their home a reality, even though the Hunnewells did not have a concrete time frame.
“I’d certainly recommend them,” she said. “I’d say, ‘Come look at my house!.’ It would sell itself.”
Evolo Home Center made Susan and Greg Hunnewell’s dream of a quiet ranch home in central Maine come true, and even customized a particular room to suit Susan’s creative talents.
